Russian Wheat Discount Hits Record High

The price gap between Russian and U.S. wheat has widened to a record $140 per ton as military tensions in the Black Sea disrupt shipments.

Record Price Gap on the Black Sea Route

Renewed mutual military attacks in the Black Sea have disrupted the global wheat market, pushing the price gap to record levels. According to UkrAgroConsult, the free-on-board (FOB) selling price of Russian milling wheat has fallen to approximately $211.50 per ton. This indicates that it is trading at nearly $140 per ton less than U.S. hard red winter wheat. This discount, which exceeded $150 at the beginning of the month, marks the widest difference recorded since the war in 2022. Last year, during the same period, this gap was only around $10 per ton.

Shipment Obstacles and Export Revisions

Despite a significant post-harvest supply of grain in both Russia and Ukraine, the world's two largest wheat exporters, attacks on ports and vessels have stalled grain shipments. Maritime traffic in the Azov and Black Sea regions is not expected to return to normal in the near future. Consulting firm SovEcon has reduced its wheat export forecast for Russia for the current season by 3.2 million tons to 41.4 million tons due to disruptions in the region. The lack of results from diplomatic contacts between Moscow and Kyiv suggests that the logistical bottleneck will persist.

Increasing Demand Pressure in Alternative Markets

The logistical bottleneck in the Black Sea has led global buyers to turn their attention to North American, European, and Australian markets. Dennis Voznesenski, an agricultural economist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, commented on the market situation:

'If the ports don't reopen, we could see a pretty significant rally. If physical buyers can't get their hands on wheat, they'll start pulling prices up elsewhere.'

U.S. wheat was already gaining value under drought pressure before the disruptions, and after reaching a three-year high in Chicago futures, it has seen a partial pullback.
