A microbial inoculation method developed by Brazilian microbiologist Mariangela Hungria has saved billions of dollars by reducing synthetic fertilizer use in soybean production and has won the 2025 World Food Prize.

The Economic Success of Biological Fertilization

Approximately 40 years of scientific work by Brazilian microbiologist Mariangela Hungria and her research team has led to revolutionary savings in soybean production. According to Embrapa data, thanks to the developed microbial inoculation method, bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen form a symbiotic relationship with soybean roots. This biological solution, with an application cost of only a few dollars per hectare, is actively preferred in approximately 85% of soybean cultivation areas across Brazil.

World Food Prize and Environmental Impact

The widespread microbial technology has significantly reduced the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, bringing tens of billions of dollars in savings and economic input to the country's agriculture annually. According to an announcement by the World Food Prize Foundation, this environmentally friendly approach developed by Hungria has been awarded the 2025 World Food Prize. Biological inoculation, which reduces the ecological pressure created by chemical fertilizers, proves the power of microscopic organisms in agricultural productivity.
