Russia's New Routes Drive Down Global Wheat Prices

Russia's introduction of alternative maritime corridors has increased supply pressure in international markets, leading to sharp declines in European futures prices on Chicago and Paris exchanges, which have also impacted European producer prices.

Sharp Decline in Global Futures Markets

Russia's implementation of alternative routes for grain exports has exerted significant price pressure on wheat contracts traded on international futures exchanges. According to Paris Euronext data, on October 28, December wheat futures contracts fell by 1.50 euros to 227 euros per ton, while March futures contracts dropped by 2.25 euros to 225.75 euros/ton. The December wheat futures contract on the Chicago Board of Trade closed down 11.25 US cents at 599 cents per bushel. This level, calculated at approximately 197.55 euros per ton, marks the lowest price seen in the market since early July.

Russia Opens Alternative Sea Routes

Data shared by Agrarheute indicates that Russia has temporarily resumed grain exports via the Sea of Azov, with the first passages through the Kerch Strait occurring since July. In addition to these shipments, planned to continue until November 15 under military security measures, an initial 3,400 tons of grain were transported via the port of Murmansk in the Arctic region. While a 28,000-ton wheat shipment was organized for the port of Casablanca, Morocco, 1.2 million tons of grain exported from Baltic Sea ports during September accounted for over 60% of the country's total maritime exports.

Producer Prices Fall in European Domestic Market

The downward trend in international exchanges has directly pulled down domestic farm and trade prices across Europe. In Germany, during the 44th calendar week, producer prices for milling wheat fell by 8.80 euros to 199.52 euros per ton. In the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, as of October 27, the price of milling wheat dropped to 194.90 euros/ton from the previous week's level of 201.60 euros. While no final consensus has been reached in diplomatic efforts by Turkey for secure transportation along the Black Sea route, Russia's activated alternative ports continue to directly alter the supply balance in the global grain market.
