Russian officials have reopened the Sea of Azov route, closed since July, allowing commercial vessels carrying grain to pass through the Kerch Strait.
Shipment Permits Begin in the Sea of Azov
Russia has allowed commercial vessels to depart from ports to resume grain shipments via the Sea of Azov. According to information reported by Reuters, Russian officials have officially approved grain-carrying vessels to depart from the Sea of Azov and pass through the Kerch Strait for the first time since July 10, 2026. It was announced that the transit permits for commercial fleet movements in the region will be valid until November 15. This strategic decision aims to accelerate the discharge of tonnage waiting in the international grain corridor.

Export Decline and Security Measures
According to Bloomberg data, at least one vessel has successfully passed through the Kerch Strait and reached the Black Sea. It has been reported that warships belonging to the Russian navy may escort the vessels during the shipment. Drone attacks in July disrupted port infrastructure, causing significant losses in exports. According to Reuters and Bloomberg data, exports from Black Sea and Azov terminals fell 93.7% year-on-year to 300,000 tons in September. The newly initiated shipment permit aims to revitalize the flow of Russian grain to global markets.
