Kazakhstan Develops New Barley Variety Resistant to Drought and Salinity

Scientists in Kazakhstan have developed a new spring barley variety named 'Batyrkhan', which shows high adaptability to drought and saline soil conditions and matures in 75-85 days.
Agronomic Characteristics of the Batyrkhan Barley Variety
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, scientists from the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Rice Farming and the Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology have bred a new spring barley variety named Batyrkhan, which exhibits high tolerance to drought and soil salinity. The variety, which has a spring growth type, has a vegetation period of 75-85 days. The new line, offering high thousand-grain weight and a large number of grains per ear, shows complete resistance to lodging, powdery, and tough smut, while also displaying low susceptibility to fusarium root rot.
Variety Registration and Production Potential
According to the Ministry's technical report, the critical phase between tillering and stem elongation in the Batyrkhan variety lasts at least 20 days. The duration of this phase directly allows the plant to form a strong vegetative mass and achieve a well-filled ear structure. The product, for which a patent application has been filed to secure its breeding success, has been included in the official state variety testing process. The aim is to prevent yield losses by proceeding with commercial production in drought-prone areas after examining the variety's performance in different agro-ecological zones.
