Comprehensive Greenhouse and Seed Support for Silivri Farmers

A project coordinated by the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and the Governorship provided greenhouse sheeting, winter seedlings, and seed support to producers in Silivri.

Comprehensive Production Support for Farmers in Silivri

The Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry implemented a significant input supply program for producers in Silivri as part of agricultural support projects. Greenhouse sheeting, winter vegetable seedlings, fodder crops, and canola seeds were delivered to producers at a distribution ceremony held at the Değirmenköy Indoor Market Place. This distribution initiative aims to strengthen protected cultivation in the region and ensure the uninterrupted continuation of plant production.

Strategic Importance and Challenges of Agricultural Production

Speaking at the program, Istanbul Deputy Governor Mustafa Kaya emphasized that agriculture is the cornerstone of production, stating:

'It is not possible to talk about any other industry or manufacturing in a place without agriculture.'

Highlighting the pressures created by the climate crisis, drought, and input costs, Istanbul Deputy Governor Mustafa Kaya expressed the need to support farmers, saying:

'Farming seems to be an extremely difficult field nowadays. We feel like wrapping all our farming brothers in cotton and protecting them; we need to support and encourage them. We are here today for this very purpose. Our farmers deserve this support more than enough. I wholeheartedly congratulate all the farmers who produce and bring these products to our tables.'

Financing from Istanbul Governorship and YIKOB

It was stated that public resources were heavily utilized to alleviate the economic burden on producers in the region. Istanbul Deputy Governor Mustafa Kaya, referring to the contributions of Istanbul Governor Davut Gül to local projects, said:

'For the support provided this past year, approximately 51 million Turkish Liras of the 80 million Turkish Lira support was covered by our Governor through Investment Monitoring and Coordination Directorate (YİKOB) support.'

It was noted that this public funding was directly channeled into the input items for local farmers, thereby reducing production costs.

Istanbul's Agricultural Production and Land Data

Istanbul Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Suat Parıldar emphasized at the ceremony that the city is not just a consumption center but also possesses a strong agricultural identity. According to the data shared by Parıldar, there are 743,000 decares of cultivated agricultural land in the city. As per the records of the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, in the 2025 production year, 293,097 tons of field crops, 68,437 tons of vegetables, 6,693 tons of fruits, and over 31 million ornamental plants were grown.

Distribution of Materials to Reduce Input Costs

To ensure producers can confidently enter the winter season against rising production costs, seeds, seedlings, and greenhouse covers were delivered to eligible producers. The renewal of greenhouse covers is expected to prevent energy and product losses, while quality seeds are anticipated to increase yields. The direct application of the materials delivered to farmers in their fields and greenhouses aims to maintain the harvest volume in the region.

Start of New Season with a Widely Attended Ceremony

Istanbul Deputy Seda Gören, Silivri District Governor Murat Eren, Silivri Deputy Mayor Yalçın Ekici, and Rumeli University Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kaya attended the distribution program in Değirmenköy. The ceremony also included the participation of the Director of Nature Conservation and National Parks 1st Region Fahrettin Ulu, Director of the 14th Regional Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) Dr. Celaleddin Ensar Şengül, representatives of political parties, chamber presidents, mukhtars, and producers. The ceremony concluded with good wishes for the new production period and a commemorative photo session.
