Antalya Agriculture Faces Crisis as Wave of Bankruptcies Hits Producers

A series of bankruptcy protection filings in Antalya, Turkey's hub for greenhouse vegetable production, have created a debt burden of approximately 10 billion Turkish Liras, pushing the supply chain into crisis.

Consecutive bankruptcy protection filings in Antalya, which accounts for 42% of Turkey's greenhouse production and 13% of its vegetable output, have caused a deep shock in the agricultural sector. The debt burden of 10 billion Turkish Liras left in the market by companies facing economic crisis has put local tradesmen and producers in a difficult situation.

Stating that the bankruptcies are creating a domino effect in the market, YENİ Party Antalya Deputy Aykut Kaya emphasized that legal regulations need to be re-evaluated:

"Checks circulating in the market are in the hands of commission agents, farmers, seedling suppliers, seed suppliers, fertilizer suppliers, dealers, transporters, and many tradesmen. Bankruptcy protection is intended to help businesses in genuine distress get back on their feet. Legal regulations on this matter should be re-examined, and bankruptcy filings should be made stricter."
