Mediterranean Fruit Fly Alert in Citrus Groves of Aydın
· GZT

Aydın Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry announced the critical control period for the Mediterranean fruit fly in citrus orchards has begun, issuing a spraying and protection calendar for producers.
Critical Alert Against Mediterranean Fruit Fly
Aydın Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry announced the start of the control process against the Mediterranean fruit fly, which can cause significant yield and quality losses in citrus orchards. Weekly population monitoring conducted through surveillance traps placed in orchards across the province revealed that the fruits have reached the 'stinging ripeness' stage, posing a risk of damage by the pest. It was highlighted that the pest can lead to infestation and premature fruit drop as the peel color changes, fruits begin to sweeten and become juicy. Officials emphasized that serious disruptions in exports could occur if necessary measures are not taken, as the pest is under external quarantine.

Control Methods and Ministry Support
There are two main control methods that producers can apply to protect their orchards. Producers opting for the chemical method must repeat partial spraying with registered plant protection products at 7-10 day intervals and continue applications until 10 days before harvest. For mass trapping, an environmentally friendly option offering biological control, the devices used must be kept on the trees until after harvest. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry aims to reduce chemical use by providing 'Biological Control Support' payments to citrus producers who choose this method.

Protecting Beekeepers and Environmental Sensitivity
Producers have been called upon to exercise sensitivity to protect the agricultural ecosystem and beneficial insects during chemical control efforts against the pest. It was stated that beekeepers operating in and around the orchards must be informed in advance before spraying operations begin. Applying pesticides in accordance with the specified technical instructions and rules is critically important for both preventing yield losses in citrus production and avoiding bee mortality. The Directorate expects producers to act in coordination for a healthy harvest season.
