EU Sugar Production Expected to Drop 19%

According to data from the European Union Sugar Market Observatory, EU sugar production is projected to fall sharply to 13.4 million tons in the 2026-2027 season, with a significant increase in import needs anticipated.
According to the initial forecasts from the European Union Sugar Market Observatory, sugar production across the EU is expected to experience a sharp decline in the 2026-2027 season. Production, estimated at 16.6 million tons in the previous 2025-2026 season, is calculated to fall by 19% to 13.4 million tons in the new season. In France, the EU's largest producer, the harvest is also expected to decrease by 15% compared to last year.
According to data reported by Bloomberg, the decline in production is expected to lead to an increase in sugar imports from 1.73 million tons in the 2025-2026 period to an estimated 2.35 million tons in the 2026-2027 season. Furthermore, the latest MARS Bulletin data indicates that sugar beet yields will decrease by 11.5% year-on-year in 2026, falling to 72.2 tons per hectare.
