Customs Duties Reduced on Dry Onions and Sunflowers

A Presidential Decree published in the Official Gazette has restructured the customs duty rates and timelines for the import of dry onions and sunflower seeds.
New Regulation Decision on Import Duties
In line with the Presidential Decree published and enacted in the Official Gazette, significant adjustments have been made to the customs duties on the import of dry onions and sunflower seeds for oil. The Ministry of Trade emphasized in its statement that these measures have been rapidly implemented to protect supply security for essential food items and to prevent speculative price movements in the markets. The new decisions, aimed at maintaining a balance between producers and consumers, have been officially put into effect in accordance with the consensus reached with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Reduced Duty Extended for Dry Onions
Within the scope of the published decree, the period for the reduced customs duty on dry onion imports has been extended. The 5% customs duty, originally planned to end on August 31, has been stipulated to continue until January 31, 2027. According to information in the Official Gazette, a customs duty of 49.5% was previously applied to dry onion imports. This extension aims to maintain the product supply and price balance in the domestic market.
Supply Security and Early Reduction for Sunflowers
The Ministry of Trade has advanced the customs duty timeline for sunflower seeds for oil to prevent supply risks due to developments in the Black Sea basin and the drought affecting Europe. The Ministry's statement indicated that the 20% customs duty, normally applied during the harvest season, will be applied at 12% starting from October 1 this year, instead of November 30. This measure aims to ensure that domestic manufacturers have access to raw materials at affordable costs, thereby preventing potential increases in refined sunflower oil prices.
