Environmental pollution allegations concerning the agricultural lands where geographically indicated Gönen Baldo rice is grown in the Gönen district of Balıkesir have resonated widely in the region. While the risks posed by pollution to the soil, water, and final product have been brought to the agenda, local representatives argued that the assessments in question are aimed at discrediting the farmers' labor and products.
Following the developments, an extraordinary meeting was held within the Gönen Chamber of Agriculture, with the participation of the presidents of the Gönen Chamber of Commerce and the Gönen Commodity Exchange. As a result of the meeting, it was decided to initiate legal proceedings and file criminal complaints regarding the allegations, while technical field inspections were launched to determine the environmental problems and production areas in question on-site.
