Raw Milk Price Freeze Brought to Parliament Amid Rising Costs

Despite rapid increases in input costs, the stagnant raw milk reference price for the past six months has been brought to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, highlighting producers' growing debt burden.

Rising Costs Squeezing Producers

Kadim Durmaz, a Member of Parliament from Tokat for the Republican People's Party (CHP), has brought the issue of stagnant raw milk prices, despite rapid increases in input costs, to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Speaking at the General Assembly podium, CHP Tokat MP Kadim Durmaz stated:

'The AK Party government continues to crush raw milk producers under rising costs. Feed, which was 850 lira in May, is now 1,100 lira, and diesel, which was 73 lira, has exceeded 100 lira. However, the milk price has been 24 lira 30 kuruş for six months. Producers are continuing to sell their milk at the price from six months ago while buying feed at increased prices.'

Urgent Call to the National Milk Council

Criticizing the National Milk Council for failing to set a new price at its October 30 meeting, Kadim Durmaz warned that the institution's silence would drive the livestock sector towards disaster. Continuing his reaction, CHP Tokat MP Kadim Durmaz included the following statements in his speech:

'Is the insensitive National Milk Council waiting for debts to grow, for animals to be sent to slaughter, and for barns to become empty? While milk prices on the shelves are constantly rising, the producer's milk price remains stagnant. Why can't the producer determine the price of their own product? I call upon the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Milk Council to take action.'

Durmaz called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to set a fair floor price that would protect producers.
