Stating that they have been working in good faith for over a year to reach a comprehensive trade agreement, Prime Minister Carney announced the recall of his delegation. Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made the following assessment:
"I instructed our negotiators last night to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what they have presented to us, and we will not give them what they are asking for."
With this statement, Carney unequivocally asserted that his country would not compromise on its sovereign rights.
Agricultural Equipment and Dairy Targeted

He conveyed that they are ready to lift retaliatory measures in strategic sectors but will not weaken key sectors, drawing the line on concessions with the following words:
"We made offers to secure a fair and comprehensive agreement that would best serve the interests of Canadians. In return for the US significantly lowering its tariffs to levels that would make it economically meaningful for Canadian companies to export to the US, we were prepared to lift our remaining retaliatory tariffs, particularly in strategic sectors like steel, aluminum, and automotive. However, there were things we would not do. We were not prepared to compromise Canada's sovereignty or weaken our key sectors."
Risk of Cost Increases and Independence
While acknowledging that the measures taken might narrow options and increase consumer costs in the short term, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the steps were taken out of necessity. Delivering a message of determination, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said:
"But we are also confident that this step is in Canada's best interest. By rejecting a bad deal, standing with Canada, and focusing on what we can control, we will build a stronger Canada for everyone."

In short, they asked for too much and offered too little. As a result, I have suspended trade negotiations with the United States."
The details of the new customs tariffs to be prepared in line with the decisions taken will be announced in the coming days. According to the official statement made by the Prime Minister's Office, the new tariff measures prepared will officially come into effect on September 8, after Labor Day.
