Samsun Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry has launched a biological control campaign by setting up 26,000 pheromone traps across the province to combat the brown marmorated stink bug, a significant threat to agricultural production.
Integrated pest management efforts are continuously underway in Samsun to combat the brown marmorated stink bug, which poses a major threat to agricultural production. Samsun Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Kemal Yılmaz, who participated in the 'Attract and Kill' application in Ömerli Neighborhood, Çarşamba district, announced that 26,000 pheromones have been deployed at points determined across the province in coordination with the Samsun Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, based on infestation levels. Yılmaz stated that mechanical, chemical, biological, and biotechnical methods are applied according to the season throughout the year, and that pheromone traps are regularly checked by teams and village headmen.
Kemal Yılmaz noted that brown marmorated stink bugs are attracted to specific areas by the scent emitted from pheromones, where they are then effectively destroyed. He issued a technical warning to producers, reminding them that chemical spraying should not be conducted in areas where pheromone traps are deployed, and that any agricultural pesticide applied must not come into contact with the pheromones. Officials emphasize that failure to adhere to this rule will cause the pheromones to lose their attractiveness, highlighting the importance of correct application methods in breaking the pest population.
Kemal Yılmaz reminded that the brown marmorated stink bug is a rapidly spreading invasive species and stated that control efforts will be intensified in September and October. Expecting a significant concentration of the pest in pheromone-treated areas, particularly in the first half of October, Samsun Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Kemal Yılmaz made the following assessment:
Yılmaz added that through the determined cooperation of village headmen, farmers, and the agricultural organization, the damage caused by the pest will be reduced below the economic damage threshold.
