TIGEM's announcement of its 2026 cereal seed sales prices, with increase rates ranging between 12.8% and 16.1%, has drawn criticism from private seed producers.
TIGEM Announces 2026 Seed Prices
The General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises (TIGEM) has shared its 2026 cereal seed sales tariff with the public. According to TIGEM data, the price per ton for durum wheat seed has been increased from 19,500 TL to 22,000 TL, and for bread wheat seed from 18,500 TL to 21,250 TL. In the institution's new list, the price per ton for barley seed has been raised from 16,500 TL to 19,000 TL, while the cost for triticale and oat seed has reached 18,000 TL from 15,500 TL.
Price Increases Lower Compared to Last Year
The new sales prices set by the institution for 2026 remained at a considerably limited level compared to the increase rates of the previous season. According to TIGEM data, seed prices were increased by 29% to 37.5% in 2025; barley by 37.5%, bread wheat by 37%, durum wheat by 30%, and triticale and oats by 29.2%. In the 2026 season, seed price increases were capped between 12.8% and 16.1%.
Private Sector Responds with Cost and Competition Concerns
While the announced new seed prices are welcomed by farmers for access to certified seeds at affordable costs, they have led to a strong reaction from private sector seed producers. Private sector firms emphasize that expenses for financing, labor, energy, premiums, cleaning, pest control, packaging, storage, transportation, and certification are rapidly increasing. It is stated that the low price increase rates are putting pressure on the production capacity and sustainability of private seed companies competing with the public sector.
