TMO Receives 205,000 Ton Hazelnut Appointment Requests

With free market prices falling below the floor price, producers in Giresun are turning to the Turkish Grain Board (TMO); approximately 100,000 producers have secured purchase appointments.

In Giresun, where hazelnut harvesting has concluded, producers are turning to the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) purchases due to free market conditions. According to information shared by TMO, approximately 100,000 producers have so far created purchase appointments for a total of 205,000 tons of hazelnuts. The decline in free market hazelnut prices to as low as 190 Turkish Lira has significantly increased interest in the institution. Producers are engaged in intensive drying and sorting preparations to bring their products into compliance with the institution's specified purchasing standards.

Producers who sold their crops to traders in previous seasons state that current prices do not cover their input costs. Hazelnut producer İbrahim Zeynel evaluated the market conditions with the following words:

The gap between trader prices in the market and the institution's purchase price plays a decisive role in farmers' delivery decisions. Hazelnut producer Yusuf Zeynel drew attention to the price difference, stating:

Yield deductions applied in the free market and increasing expenses continue to strain producer budgets. Hazelnut producer Vahdet Pirgaip made the following statement regarding the latest market situation:

Pirgaip, who has delivered 2 tons of his product to the institution so far, emphasized that he plans to deliver his remaining harvest to the board as well.

Producers also point to the effects of area-based quota limitations in official purchases on the market. Farmers who achieve yields exceeding the 100-kilogram per decare quota limit are forced to sell their excess harvest on the free market. Producers, who also criticize the market guidance from agricultural chambers, demand that expectations be managed correctly and that producers be better protected against market fluctuations.
