Global agriculture giant Cargill increased its revenue to $164 billion and operating profit to $3.8 billion in its fiscal year, driven by geopolitical risks and rising biofuel demand.
Cargill Boosts Operating Profit
According to audited financial statements reviewed by Bloomberg News, global agriculture giant Cargill's adjusted operating profit increased by 10% to $3.8 billion in the fiscal year ending May 31. The company's annual revenue also rose by 6.5% to $164 billion. Despite this operating profit performance, net profit was pressured by asset impairments and one-time restructuring expenses. The dividend payment, which was a record approximately $1.5 billion last year, was reduced to $865 million this year.
Impact of Energy and Biofuel Market
Geopolitical risks in the Middle East, restricting shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, directly impacted energy and agricultural markets. Along with energy market dynamics, soybean futures, a key biofuel feedstock, saw a 16% increase year-to-date. Mandates in the U.S. and other countries for blending biofuels into fuels are supporting demand for corn and soy. Giants in the sector, known as the ABCD group, such as ADM and Bunge, have revised their financial forecasts for 2026 upwards, expecting growth from biofuel regulations.
Restructuring and Operational Transformation
As part of a comprehensive corporate restructuring undertaken over the past two years, Cargill has reduced its number of core business units from five to three and its business groups from 23 to 14. This operational simplification process has involved several thousand job reductions. Cargill CEO Brian Sikes stated in his letter to stakeholders in the annual report that the company has renewed its operating model. Sikes announced increased investments in digital capabilities, an updated technology strategy, and accelerated decision-making processes.
