Barley Production in Turkey Expected to Reach 9 Million Tons

According to an analysis by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, barley production is projected to increase by 50% this year, reaching 9 million tons, driven by favorable climate conditions.
50% Increase Expected in Barley Harvest
According to an analysis report prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Turkey's barley production is projected to increase by 50% this year compared to last year, reaching 9 million tons. Last year, domestic production had declined by 25.9% to 6 million tons due to the impact of drought. On global markets, barley production is estimated to be approximately 154.2 million tons across 44.4 million hectares in the 2025-2026 season. Considering that 85.9% of barley consumption in Turkey during the 2024-2025 period is used as feed, this expected increase in production is anticipated to play a critical role in reducing feed costs for livestock operations.
Climate Conditions and Sowing Areas
The exceptionally favorable meteorological conditions recorded throughout the 2025-2026 production season were decisive in the record increase expected in production. While extreme heatwaves were not experienced in the main barley-growing regions, rainfall amounts exceeded both seasonal averages and the previous year's levels. Field inspections indicated that plant development progressed very healthily. Evaluating the sowing areas across Turkey, Konya ranked first last year with 3.1 million decares, followed by Ankara with 2.5 million decares of barley cultivation.
TMO Purchase Price and Production Supports
The barley purchase price set by the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) for 2026 has been revised upwards, bringing good news to producers. The TMO barley purchase price, which was 11,000 Turkish Lira per ton last year, has been increased by approximately 15.9% to 12,750 Turkish Lira this year. For barley, which is included in the production planning scope, the Ministry provides support under three main headings: basic support, planned production, and production development. Additionally, supplementary water restriction support is provided to farmers in agricultural basins where underground water levels are insufficient and water restrictions are identified.
