Declining Pollinators Collapse Plant Climate Adaptation

A University of Michigan study revealed that plants have lost 96% of their climate adaptation capacity by dedicating survival energy to pollination due to a decline in insect populations.

Pollination Crisis in Agricultural Production

A new scientific study conducted by the University of Michigan shows that climate change and declining insect populations are leading agricultural production into a serious bottleneck. Globally, 35% of the food supply requires the presence of pollinators. Today, approximately $1.5 trillion of the global agricultural economy depends directly or indirectly on pollination processes. However, a 1.2-degree Celsius temperature increase compared to the pre-industrial era and a 40% decline in pollinator populations over the last 30 years are shaking the agricultural ecosystem.

The Dilemma Between Climate and Reproduction

According to research data, plants face a deep dilemma between developing climatic adaptation mechanisms, such as early flowering, against drought and temperature stress, and ensuring their reproduction. In this challenging ecological process, flora species direct all their energy and genetic investment towards attracting declining insect populations to survive. Plants that sideline climate adaptation become vulnerable to changing weather conditions, leading them into an evolutionary dead end, which fundamentally threatens agricultural sustainability.

96% Decline in Nine Years

Scientists focused on morning glory (Ipomoea) populations, considered a key indicator of wildlife in agricultural areas. Observations revealed that within a mere nine-year period, the adaptation rate of plants to climate change declined by 96%. The findings concretely document that the ability of plants to respond to and develop resistance against climatic pressures such as drought and extreme heat has come to a near standstill.
