New 48-Well Geothermal Project Launched in Aydın Plain

The EIA process has officially commenced for a new geothermal power plant project worth 1.94 billion Turkish Liras, planned on agricultural lands and conservation basins in Aydın.

New GPP Initiative in Aydın Plain

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has initiated the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for a new geothermal power plant planned to be established in Aydın by KÇS Kahramanmaraş Çimento Beton Company, operating under Kipaş Holding. A total investment budget of 1.945 billion Turkish Liras has been allocated for the mega-project, which aims to be implemented within the boundaries of Kalfaköy, Kocagür, and Gölhisar neighborhoods. According to the project file, a total of 48 production and reinjection wells are planned to be drilled across the site. While the closest structure to the energy site is stated to be 115 meters away, the facility is located 342 meters from the Aydın Adnan Menderes University campus and 645 meters from a student dormitory on the campus.

Agricultural Lands and Conservation Boundaries

According to the data in the prepared project file, the planned first power plant site falls within an area designated as a large urban green space in zoning plans. It has been reported that some wells belonging to the power plant in question directly overlap with pasture areas, and a significant portion of the project land is registered as olive groves and fig orchards in land registry records. It has been clearly determined that a large part of the second power plant area, designated as an organized industrial zone, and its well locations fall within the boundaries of agricultural land, irrigation areas, and the legally protected Aydın Plain Major Plain Conservation Area.

Geothermal Density and Risks in the Region

According to data shared by the Germencik Environment Platform, there are currently 40 geothermal power plant projects operating in Aydın province. It is stated that the geothermal expansion is suppressing agricultural productivity in the region, where fig, olive, cotton, and grape production is intensive. According to Kipaş Holding data, the group currently has 10 plants in the city; 7 of these facilities generate electricity under Maren Maraş Elektrik Üretim, 2 under KÇS Kahramanmaraş Çimento Beton, and 1 under Kiper Elektrik Üretim.
