Canada Imposes Additional Tariffs of Up to 50% on US Products

The Canadian Government has responded to the US tariff decision with additional taxes on over 700 products and a $7.5 billion support package for farmers and SMEs.

Retaliatory Tariffs and Food Taxes

The Canadian Government has made a comprehensive retaliatory decision following the US's imposition of a 50% tariff on $20 billion of Canadian imports and the failure of trade talks. According to the official announcement, the new regulation, which will come into effect on September 8, covers more than 700 products originating from the US. Government officials announced that customs duties of 50% will be applied to steel, aluminum, furniture, and apparel products, 25% to the food group including cheese and some seafood, and 15% to electronics and hand tools.

Financial Support for Farmers and SMEs

Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that these meticulously crafted measures aim to protect the country's economy. The Canadian Government has announced an incentive package worth C$7.5 billion to secure the cash flow of small and medium-sized enterprises that could be affected by trade tensions, protect employment, and support agricultural producers. Officials announced that the determined tariffs are designed to minimize any negative impact on the local food market.
