Black Sea Tensions Send Global Wheat Prices Soaring

Chicago wheat futures hit their highest level since July 2023 as clashes between Russia and Ukraine target port infrastructure.

The intensification of conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and damage to port infrastructure have led to sharp price movements in grain markets. Benchmark wheat futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange gained 2.6%, reaching their highest level since July 2023. Wheat prices, which jumped 6.4% on Wednesday, recorded an 18% increase on a monthly basis due to shipping disruptions.

Damage to terminals in the Black Sea has significantly slowed down shipments from the region, while also breaking the pressure of surplus supply in global markets. Russia and Ukraine, which account for more than a quarter of the world's wheat exports, also play a decisive role in the trade of barley, corn, and sunflower oil. Potential infrastructure attacks and stalled negotiations further escalate supply risks in the international grain corridor.
