Thrace Sunflower Producers Gear Up for a Bountiful Harvest Season

Rains in Thrace, Turkey's edible oil granary, have alleviated drought stress in sunflowers, leading producers and agricultural officials to anticipate a significant increase in yield compared to previous years.
Sunflower Harvest Excitement in Thrace
Producers in Edirne, Kırklareli, and Tekirdağ, provinces that supply a significant portion of Turkey's edible oil needs, are preparing for the critical harvest period. Intermittent rainfall throughout the season has reduced drought stress, substantially increasing yield and quality expectations in the fields. Farmers and agricultural officials anticipate a much more bountiful harvest across the region this year, following the losses experienced in previous seasons.
Rainfall and Temperature Impact in Edirne
Edirne Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Hüseyin Arabacı announced that sunflower cultivation has been carried out on approximately 1.3 million decares across the province. Noting that some regions received 20-30 kilograms of rain, Arabacı highlighted the effect of recent heatwaves:
"We thought the sunflowers had recovered with the rains that fell until a week ago. The heads started to look better, but with the heat in recent days, the heads have started to wilt. What's important is how well the grains have filled. We will see this during the harvest period."
Recalling the drought losses of previous years, Edirne Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Hüseyin Arabacı made the following assessment regarding yield expectations:
"The past few years have been dry; in some places, no product was obtained at all. This year, the situation is better, but I don't think the expectation of 250-300 kilograms per decare yield will be realized everywhere. In many regions, the yield will be below this. The definitive picture will emerge with the harvest."
High Yield Hopes in Kırklareli
Kırklareli Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Ekrem Şaylan emphasized the strategic importance of sunflowers for the provincial and regional economy, stating that the drought experienced in previous years is behind them. Reporting strong plant growth, Şaylan expressed that producers will have a profitable period. Evaluating the season, Kırklareli Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Ekrem Şaylan described the on-the-ground situation as follows:
"Sunflowers will be better this year compared to last year. We hope our producers will have a good year."
Record Yield Expected in Tekirdağ
In Tekirdağ, the sunflower production hub of Turkey, cultivation is carried out on approximately 1.7 million decares. Tekirdağ Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mehmet Aksoy, pointing to Thrace's position as an edible oil granary, announced the yield targets based on observations from field teams:
"As with all products, we expect high yields in sunflowers. Our teams continue to make observations in the field and meet with our producers. We typically achieve yields above 225 kilograms per decare for sunflowers, but we anticipate the yield to be even higher this year."
