Black Sea's Local Figs Being Registered and Integrated into the Economy
· Tarım TV

The Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute has initiated the registration and distribution process by collecting 16 local fig genotypes from 6 provinces and conserving them in Bafra.
The Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute (KTAE) is conducting a comprehensive study to protect the genetic resources of local fig species in the Black Sea Region. Within the scope of the project, seeds collected in 2018 from the provinces of Samsun, Ordu, Giresun, Kastamonu, Sinop, and Artvin were planted in a special selection garden established in the Bafra district of Samsun. As the fig saplings planted in the garden begin to bear their first fruits, the research aims to preserve the region's rich genetic heritage, which is at risk of extinction, and integrate it into agricultural production.
A total of 16 different genotypes collected from across the Black Sea Region are present in the selection garden in Bafra. İlyas Deligöz, Director of the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute, explained the main objectives of the ongoing study with the following words:

In line with the ongoing research, 3 varieties – one for table consumption, one for jam, and one for both table consumption and jam – will be submitted for official registration next month, followed by 2 table varieties in February.
Emphasizing that after the completion of the registration process, the qualified saplings obtained will be propagated and distributed to producers, İlyas Deligöz, Director of the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute, made the following statements regarding the importance of the study:
