As the drought map of England expands, drought has been officially declared across 71.3% of the country's land, with water restrictions now in effect for areas inhabited by 27 million people.
Regions Officially Declared Drought-Stricken
The drought map has been expanded following a meeting of the National Drought Group, comprising officials from the Environment Agency, government representatives, and farmer representatives. According to the official announcement, the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Kent, East Sussex, Solent, and South Downs regions have been added to the list. Consequently, drought has been officially declared across 71.3% of England's land area. Tony Grayling, Chair of the National Drought Group, announced that severe drought conditions will continue as long as sufficient and continuous rainfall does not occur.
Water Resources and Restrictions
It is reported that approximately 45 million people live in areas experiencing severe drought, with 27 million people affected by water restrictions. It is emphasized that all water resources across the country are under intense pressure. The lack of rain for two months in many parts of England, known for its rainy climate, is straining agricultural production and water reserves. Human-induced climate change plays a decisive role in the spread of drought and water management.
