Russia's Foreign Ministry announced that attacks on civilian merchant ships in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov have disrupted global grain and fertilizer supplies.
Attacks on Grain Shipments in the Black Sea
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova announced in a written statement on August 12, 2026, that Ukraine has intensified its attacks on logistics infrastructure and civilian vessels in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. Zakharova reported that Turkish-owned civilian ships named Yaşar and Nadezhda were among the attacked maritime vehicles, and that essential agricultural products such as grain and sunflower oil, transported under foreign trade agreements, have been directly harmed. It was noted that these actions clearly violate international law.
Risk to Global Food Security
Evaluating the impacts of these developments on international agricultural markets, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova made the following assessment:
"Kiev's actions in the Azov and Black Seas are undermining global food security. The actions of the Kiev administration, aimed at creating chaos in the global food market, serve the interests of Western countries. These actions align with the illegitimate unilateral sanctions imposed by Western leaders on Kiev in the financial, economic, and energy sectors. All of this fuels grain and fertilizer shortages and increases in global food prices, raising costs for countries in the Global South and the East."
