Corn Stalks in Batman Transformed into Biomass Energy

Harvest residues from corn grown on 60,000 decares in Batman are being sent to energy plants instead of being burned, preventing environmental pollution and providing additional income for farmers.

According to data from the Batman Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, corn is produced on 60,000 decares of land across the city. During the ongoing harvest season in the agricultural lands, tons of plant waste remain after the combine harvesters. Batman Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Necdet Tuncer, emphasized that a much larger amount of stubble is produced than the grain corn obtained from the fields. Projects are underway with the aim of completely preventing the burning of this waste in the fields.

A special action plan was prepared under the coordination of the Batman Governorship to protect the organic matter that was previously disposed of by burning in the fields. Batman Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Necdet Tuncer, made the following assessment regarding the ongoing work:

The administrative and technical measures taken have directed producers towards new methods of utilizing agricultural waste. Energy companies have come to the city, signed contracts with farmers, and started collecting corn stalks left in the fields after harvest as biofuel raw material. Drawing attention to the system's operation and the achieved volume, Batman Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Necdet Tuncer, shared the following information:

Private sector representatives directly purchasing in the field also play an active role in bringing agricultural residues into industry. Stating that they have been carrying out agricultural waste collection activities since 2021, Company Official Vehdi Yalçınkaya expressed that operations have accelerated with the corn harvest. Company Official Vehdi Yalçınkaya, who stated that they transport the collected material as raw material to energy-producing facilities, spoke on the matter:

With the implemented model, the destruction of soil structure by burning has been prevented, and a new economic value chain has been established in the rural area. Fields are cleaned and prepared for the next planting season under more favorable conditions. While producers gain additional income by selling stubble, the hundreds of thousands of tons of biomass collected prevent environmental pollution and provide direct raw material support for Turkey's renewable energy production.
