U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation introducing an additional 300,000-ton beef import quota and a 90-day tariff exemption to curb record-high red meat prices.
Significant Increase in Import Quota
U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation temporarily increasing the import tariff quota by 300,000 tons to curb rapidly rising beef prices in the country. According to the decision, announced under the title 'Ensuring Greater Access to Affordable Beef for American Consumers,' the specified additional quota will be released to the market on a 'first-come, first-served' basis. The special quota calendar prepared within the scope of the presidential proclamation will be distributed in three different 30-day periods, starting on September 1, October 1, and October 31, in installments of 100,000 tons each. Furthermore, Trump announced that a tariff exemption outside the quota would be applied to imports up to 300,000 tons for 90 days to lower ground beef prices.
Herd Contraction and Pricing Condition
The presidential proclamation emphasized that the U.S. cattle herd population has fallen to its lowest level in the last 75 years, and restrictions on live animal imports from Mexico, along with drought, wildfires, and parasite outbreaks, have significantly reduced domestic supply. While it was stated that increasing domestic demand is escalating price pressure, a definitive limit was set for imported meats to be released to the market. According to official conditions, if imported products are not offered for sale at a price at least 25% below the current market price, remaining import quotas may be completely canceled to prevent foreign producers from making unfair profits.
