Strategic Importance of Production Emphasized
Speaking at the ceremony, Istanbul Deputy Governor Mustafa Kaya stated that agriculture is a strategic sector, saying:
'It is not possible for a country that does not produce to be strong. One of the most important branches of production is, as you will appreciate, agriculture. In a place without agriculture, it is not possible to talk about other industries. Therefore, agriculture is the area that should be supported first and foremost. Especially recently, climate change, drought, and on the other hand, the decrease in water supply are truly challenging farmers. Farming seems to be an extremely difficult field nowadays. We need to wrap them in cotton wool and support them. We are here for this purpose. Our Governor strives to support all projects at the Istanbul scale, beyond the basic support programs mentioned, with dedication, especially in Istanbul.'
Planned Production and New Support Model
Istanbul Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Suat Parıldar drew attention to the importance of agricultural production planning, stating that a planned production model has been adopted in all 81 provinces. In his statement, Parıldar indicated that as basic support, 50% of diesel fuel and 25% of fertilizer costs are paid to producers. Parıldar also conveyed that for farmers engaged in planned production, the entire diesel cost is covered, and 50% of the fertilizer cost is provided as a support payment.
Significant Increase in Support Payments
Stating that there are 743,000 decares of cultivated agricultural land in Istanbul and that Silivri is the main production base, Istanbul Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Suat Parıldar announced that the support provided to farmers has been increased in line with geopolitical developments and fluctuations in input costs. Parıldar announced that with a Presidential decree, agricultural support payments have been increased by 18.5% for 2026 and by 42% for 2027.
