Import Pressure Reduced Sunflower Prices by 10 Liras

Sunflower prices, which reached 44 lira at the beginning of harvest, dropped to 32 lira due to customs tax regulations and heavy imports.

Trakya University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Agricultural Economics Lecturer Prof. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu drew attention to the sharp decline in producer prices after the completion of the sunflower harvest. Stating that the prices of sunflowers with 40 percent oil content were at 42, 43 and 44 TL at the beginning of the harvest, Gaytancıoğlu emphasized that the market balance was disrupted with the earlier customs tax regulations. Stating that prices suddenly dropped to 32 and 33 TL levels, Prof. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu expressed the grievance experienced by the manufacturer with the following words:

Prof. stated that the main reason for the price pressure in the market is clearly seen in foreign trade data. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu announced that Türkiye made heavy imports in the first 7 months. Pointing to official data between January and July, Prof. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu conveyed the foreign trade table as follows:

Arguing that even a small part of the high budget transferred to imports is given as support to domestic farmers, the country's foreign dependency will end. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu made the following call:

Emphasizing that import-based agricultural policies are unsustainable, Prof. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu stated that geopolitical risks in the Black Sea basin threaten supply security. Noting that the producers should be given their rights, Gaytancıoğlu expressed his reproach as follows: Prof. drew attention to the conflicts in the region. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu emphasized the strategic importance of protecting domestic production with the following words:

"Look, Russia and Ukraine are at war, Russia is constantly hitting Ukraine's ships, there are great risks. Prices may rise. What will you do then? You will tell the domestic producer, 'Come on, produce', but I wonder if you will be able to find the producer."
