TMO Boosts Corn Reserves Amid Supply Squeeze Concerns
· TMO

The Turkish Grain Board (TMO) announced it is bolstering its corn reserves as a precautionary measure against potential supply shortages stemming from import disruptions due to the Russia-Ukraine war and rising feed demand.
Import Disruptions and Rising Consumption
According to an official statement from the Turkish Grain Board (TMO), the domestic corn production in Turkey is expected to reach approximately 8.1 million tons this year. Data from the institution indicates a steady increase in domestic consumption driven by the growing demand from the feed sector. The statement noted that the supply needed to meet stock requirements, normally fulfilled through external procurement, has been disrupted due to logistical challenges arising from the Russia-Ukraine war. The near-halt in shipments from these countries has led to intense demand for limited imported products, causing price offers above market levels and market volatility.

Market Stability and Stocking Initiative
The TMO announced that it has proactively reinforced its corn reserves to preempt potential supply shortages in the coming months, intervening before the harvest is fully completed. Officials from the institution stated that current harvest period market prices allow producers to sell their crops under favorable conditions, and ensuring the value of domestic produce is a primary objective. According to the TMO statement, this move aims to curb speculative activities, secure raw material access for the industry, and prevent the cost pressures in corn-consuming sectors from translating into food inflation at the consumer level.
