Raisin Prices Lag Behind Last Season
· GıdaTarım

Producers are reacting to the Turkish Grain Board's (TMO) announcement of seedless raisin purchase prices below last year's levels, with free market prices falling as low as 50 lira.
TMO Lowers Raisin Prices
The Turkish Grain Board (TMO) announced seedless raisin purchase prices, which producers had been awaiting for days, below last year's levels. According to official figures shared by the institution, the purchase price for Grade 9 raisins, which constitute the majority of the harvest, was reduced to 95 TL from last year's 120 TL. In the newly announced tariff, Grade 10 raisins were lowered to 100 TL from 130 TL, Grade 8 raisins to 90 TL from 110 TL, and Grade 7 raisins to 85 TL from 100 TL. Producers expecting a purchase price of 150 TL per kilogram were disappointed with the announced tariff.
Increased Costs and Loss of Income
The low prices announced, despite rising diesel, fertilizer, and pesticide costs, have drawn a reaction from producers in Manisa. Manisa Deputy Vehbi Bakırlıoğlu, who conveyed the problems faced by producers and the loss of purchasing power, made the following assessment:
'In fact, the price of grapes was 100-120 lira in the year before last. Currently, a price lower than even the year before last has been announced. A producer who could buy 3 liters of diesel for the grapes sold the year before last can now only buy 1 liter of diesel.'
The reduction in purchase prices during a period of rising input costs has deepened the income loss in the viticulture sector.
Producers Under Pressure in the Free Market
It was stated that TMO's delayed announcement of purchase prices disrupted the price balance in the free market to the detriment of the producer. Summarizing the current market situation, Manisa Deputy Vehbi Bakırlıoğlu described the process with the following words:
'Purchases are being made in the free market at prices much lower than these. Producers with debts were forced to sell grapes to traders at 60-65 lira to cover their debts. The net amount they receive is between 50-55 lira. There is a serious problem. There is also a problem with fresh grapes. While industrial grapes were sold at 18-20 lira, they are now at 8 lira.'
