Mersin Tops List of Fraudulent Meat Products

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has publicly announced businesses using equine meat instead of beef in its imitation and adulteration list.

Ministry Exposes Imitation and Adulteration

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry continues its nationwide inspections without interruption to ensure consumers access reliable food. As a result of official controls and laboratory analyses, firms using equine meat instead of beef have been individually identified. The list of disclosures, announced to the public via the Ministry's 'Reliable Food' platform, highlighted fraud in meat and meat products in particular. It has been documented that food fraudsters have adulterated many widely consumed staple products, from kavurma to köfte, pide to lahmacun, sucuk to kuşbaşı, and tantuni.

Mersin Ranks First by Province

According to the Ministry's 5-month inspection results between March 12 and August 20, Mersin was the city with the highest number of irregularities detected on the list. Official data revealed the use of horse and donkey meat in a total of 18 businesses across Mersin. Following Mersin, Kırklareli, Adana, and İzmir ranked second on the list with 5 businesses each. The inspection reports also noted the presence of businesses disregarding public health in provinces such as Manisa, Bursa, Gaziantep, and Kayseri.
