Şeker-İş Supports Sugar Investigation in 8 Provinces

The Şeker-İş Union has fully backed the investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into 25 companies in the starch-based sugar market for quota violations, spanning 8 provinces.
Comprehensive Judicial Investigation in the Sugar Market
A wide-ranging judicial investigation has been launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office following allegations of violations of quotas and domestic market sales limitations in the production and trade of starch-based sugar. Within the scope of the operational process, conducted from Istanbul, 25 companies operating across 8 provinces have been directly brought under examination. The investigation, deepened by judicial bodies, aims to prevent unfair competition and the supply of products contrary to regulations in the agricultural industry.
Şeker-İş Union's Open Support for the Investigation
The Turkish Food and Sugar Industry Workers' Union has issued an official statement regarding the sugar investigation initiated by judicial bodies. The union's management stated that they view this legal process, launched to protect market rules, very positively. The written statement made by the Şeker-İş Union Management included the following remarks:
"We are pleased that the issue is being pursued with determination; we appreciate the will and determined efforts of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Treasury and Finance in this regard."
Emphasis on Child Health and Quotas
The statement emphasized that the content and production method of food are not only an economic but also a social responsibility. Şeker-İş Union pointed out that artificial sweeteners and high sugar consumption lay the groundwork for obesity and metabolic disorders in children. Advocating for consumers to be correctly informed, the Şeker-İş Union Management made the following assessment:
"We believe that the quota system in the sugar market, market order, unfair competition, consumer rights, food safety, and public health must be evaluated as a whole."
Food Safety and Inter-Ministerial Coordination
It was reported that concealing the true content of products or presenting them to the market with misleading labels constitutes a food fraud offense. It was stated that such irregularities have serious consequences detrimental to both producers and consumers. The union stated that they will stand against all practices that threaten human health and the reliable supply of food, and thanked the officials from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Treasury and Finance for resolutely carrying out the investigation.
