Black Sea Peace Prospects Lower Global Wheat Prices

Peace expectations regarding the Russia-Ukraine war have pushed wheat prices down to $7.53 per bushel, while high input costs and climate risks continue to fuel market uncertainty.

Optimism in the Black Sea Slows Wheat

Expectations that the Russia-Ukraine War could permanently end have led to a decline in global wheat market prices. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the two countries must reach an agreement, saying:

"Ultimately, the problem must be resolved between the parties to the conflict."

This statement eased tensions in the market. While optimism regarding Black Sea grain shipments is increasing, the lack of concrete steps so far maintains a sense of unease.

Prices Pull Back from Peak

The price of wheat per bushel, which reached $7.95 in July, its highest level since February 2023, has fallen to $7.53. Zafer Ergezen, an expert in futures and commodity markets, noted that Russia and Ukraine account for approximately 30% of global wheat trade, stating:

"I interpret the recent pullback as profit-taking. However, risks persist within the overall picture."

Cost Pressure and Climate Risk

Despite the short-term price drop, fuel, fertilizer, and transportation expenses continue to exert significant pressure on agricultural commodities. Conflicts in the Middle East keep oil prices high, directly increasing production costs. Furthermore, drought and hot weather conditions attributed to El Niño are expected to persist until early 2027. This situation keeps concerns about agricultural yield losses alive, challenging supply security.

Future Expectations in the Global Market

While easing in Black Sea trade routes supports downward movements in the short term, global agricultural costs are keeping floor prices elevated. Commodity Markets Expert Zafer Ergezen reported that increases in insurance, transportation, and fertilizer costs will continue to support wheat prices. Developments in the Black Sea and weather conditions are expected to be decisive in pricing, with product prices predicted to maintain their strong trend.
