Locally Developed Drought-Resistant Rice Varieties Tested in Çorum

Locally developed rice varieties, Kocaman İnci and Gizlenci, designed to withstand salinity and drought stress, have been introduced in three districts as complementary alternatives to Osmancık 97.

Resilient Rice Production with Local Varieties

The Çorum Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry is testing locally developed varieties, created by the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute, to strengthen the region's established rice production culture. Within the scope of this study, local rice varieties named Kocaman İnci and Gizlenci have been planted in trial plots established in the districts of Laçin, İskilip, and Kargı. Regular field inspections conducted by the Provincial Directorate's technical personnel are closely monitoring the plants' phenological development, their adaptability to the region's ecology, and their yield potential. Initial observations indicate that the varieties exhibit strong development against environmental stress factors.

Complementary Alternatives to Osmancık 97

The new local varieties under trial are not intended to replace Osmancık 97 rice, which is a registered asset of the region. Officials state that these varieties will play a complementary role, particularly in areas where Osmancık 97 may experience yield losses due to environmental pressures such as salinity and drought. The aim of the ongoing adaptation studies is to provide producers with seed options suitable for different land and water conditions. Upon completion of the project, the goal is to establish a more resilient and sustainable rice production structure against the climate crisis and drought.
