New Wholesale Market Law to Lower Food Prices on the Way

As the Ministries of Trade, Treasury, and Agriculture tighten market inspections to curb exorbitant food prices, they are preparing to bring a new Wholesale Market Law draft to Parliament, which will create opportunities for producer unions.

Exorbitant Price Inspections in Markets

The Ministry of Trade has begun examining the differences between purchase and sale prices in markets to prevent exorbitant price increases in the food market, particularly in the fruit and vegetable sector. Within the scope of inspections, businesses have been requested to provide official documents for input and output prices for the last 3 months. The analysis focuses on how a basic food product procured at 10 liras reaches the consumer at 40 liras, taking into account business costs such as rent and labor. Officials are also meticulously reviewing consumer complaints received through CİMER and the Mobile Application for Unfair Price Increases.

New Wholesale Market Law Preparations

The new Wholesale Market Law, expected to be on the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the new legislative year through the joint efforts of the Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry, Treasury and Finance, and Trade, aims to increase oversight in the supply chain. In line with the draft law, the goal is to strengthen the effectiveness of cooperatives and producer unions in the market, thereby reducing consumer prices. Within the scope of the regulation, it is planned to increase the 20% rent discount applied to producer unions in wholesale markets and the 20% quota allocated to producers in local markets, and to significantly increase penalties for exorbitant price hikes.
