Sorghum-Sudan Grass Cultivation in Iğdır Reduces Feed Costs

Sorghum-Sudan grass hybrids, cultivated with a 75% subsidy in Iğdır, yield twice as much as silage corn, alleviating roughage costs for local livestock operations.

Within the scope of the Program for Effective Utilization of Agricultural Lands, carried out by the General Directorate of Plant Production of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, new steps are being taken to meet the roughage needs of the livestock sector in Iğdır. Producer Şahset Tınakçı, benefiting from the 75% seed subsidy support provided by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, cultivated a sorghum-Sudan grass hybrid on his 10-decare land in Oba village. This cultivation aims to significantly reduce input costs for livestock operations in the region and increase the production of alternative fodder crops.

The plant, which shows high adaptability to the region's climate conditions, has the potential to be harvested 3 times a year under suitable conditions. Iğdır Commodity Exchange Chairman Serhat Kumtepe highlighted the product's cost and efficiency advantages:
