159 Million Lira Support for Small Ruminant Improvement in Elazığ

Within the scope of small ruminant improvement projects in Elazığ, which have been ongoing uninterruptedly for 15 years, 159.1 million liras have been allocated to 283 breeders, with over 50,000 breeding animals registered.
15 Years of Monitoring in Small Ruminant Improvement
Small ruminant improvement efforts coordinated by the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry continue uninterruptedly across Elazığ. According to the data from the 2026 Project Executive Committee Meeting, 283 breeders are involved in the project that has been ongoing since 2011. Of the 8 sub-projects carried out province-wide, 2 focus on Morkaraman, and 6 focus on the Şavak Akkaraman breed, which is the region's most important genetic resource. Within the scope of these studies, performance and pedigree records of a total of 50,074 breeding animals are regularly maintained.
159 Million Lira Resources for Producers
The support provided to Elazığ breeders has reached a significant level in the economic aspect of the improvement project. According to the Project Executive Committee records, a total of 159,179,965 TL in support payments have been transferred to breeders in the province over the 15-year period from 2011 to 2026. Through these cash supports, the aim is to improve the quality of breeding stock in flocks, increase meat and milk yield, and enable producers to access high-quality breeding animals more easily.
Local Breeds Protected Through Institutional Cooperation
The project, which aims to develop the small ruminant potential of the region, is managed through a multi-stakeholder structure. The studies are carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry TAGEM, Elazığ Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Fırat University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the Elazığ Sheep and Goat Breeders Association. While the monitoring of animals in the field is overseen through Ministry systems, the genetic potential of local breeds adapted to the region's climate and grazing conditions is secured with academic support.
