Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Demands Revision of Hazelnut Yield Estimate
· giresunoncu.com

Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Nurittin Karan stated that the hazelnut yield estimate of 705,000 tons does not align with on-the-ground realities and called for the figure to be revised down to below 550,000 tons.
Yield Estimate Does Not Reflect Reality
Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Nurittin Karan announced that the official estimate of approximately 705,000 tons for Turkey's hazelnut yield does not align with the realities on the ground. Karan argued that the current figures are not reflective of the truth, stating that factors such as low yield in orchards, empty nuts, disease and pest impacts, as well as shedding and losses, must be taken into account.
Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Nurittin Karan made the following assessment regarding the production volume:
'Our assessment is that Turkey's actual shelled hazelnut production should be re-evaluated as below 550,000 tons.'
High Yield is Driving Down Prices
Karan highlighted that yield data is not just a statistic but the most critical market indicator directly determining hazelnut prices, emphasizing that inflated estimates harm farmers.
Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Nurittin Karan said the following about market perception:
'Announcing a high yield can create a 'hazelnuts are abundant' perception, thereby reducing the value of the product in the hands of the producer. Our farmers, who produce with their sweat, will pay the price for this.'
It was also recalled that in previous seasons, there were significant discrepancies between initial estimates and the actual yields at the end of the harvest.
Call for Revision Based on Field Realities
Addressing the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the yield determination commissions, Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Nurittin Karan appealed to the officials:
'Look at the orchard again. Look at the sack again. Look at the storage again. Look at the product entering the market again. If the announced figure does not align with the reality on the ground, there should be no hesitation in revising it.'
Emphasizing that the truth about hazelnuts is determined in the sack, not at the desk, Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Nurittin Karan concluded his remarks:
'Turkey's hazelnut yield must be realistically recalculated and revised to a level below approximately 550,000 tons in light of the current data. The truth of hazelnuts is revealed in the sack; not at a desk. We will continue our struggle to protect the rights of the producer's hard work.'
