Ministry to Ban Three Chemical Substances in Agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has decided to gradually ban 3 chemical active ingredients used in agricultural production by the end of 2027, citing food safety and environmental health concerns.

The General Directorate of Food and Control of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has decided to ban three active chemical ingredients used in agricultural production to ensure food safety and protect environmental health. In line with international scientific data and European Union standards, the use of active ingredients named thiophanate methyl, indoxacarb, and phosmet in plant protection products will be gradually phased out. The availability of sufficient registered alternative products to replace these chemicals in the field has paved the way for the Ministry to accelerate the restriction process. This regulation aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices.

To avoid negatively impacting producers and the supply chain, the Ministry has established a phased transition timeline. Under the implemented plan, the actual import of products containing these 3 active ingredients will be completely halted as of November 13, 2026. Subsequently, domestic manufacturing of the chemicals will cease starting December 18, 2026. In the final phase of the determined timeline, the use of the aforementioned chemicals in fields and agricultural areas will be entirely prohibited as of December 31, 2027. Thus, the specified chemical substances will be completely removed from Turkish agriculture.

With this update to the plant protection products regulation, the Ministry aims to minimize residue risks in foods reaching consumers' tables. This step, focused on protecting consumer health, will also alleviate the pressure of chemicals on soil and water ecosystems. Full compliance with the determined ban timeline will directly increase the reliability of Turkish agricultural products in both domestic and international markets. The Ministry will continue to conduct extensive information activities for farmers and producers regarding the use of alternative registered products during the transition period.
