2.5 Million Sterile Flies Released into Nature in Menderes

In the Menderes district of Izmir, 2.5 million sterile flies were released into nature as part of efforts to combat the Mediterranean fruit fly, aiming to reduce the use of chemical pesticides.
In the Menderes district of Izmir, a biotechnological study was conducted to promote environmentally friendly methods in pest control for agricultural production. 2.5 million sterile Mediterranean fruit flies, produced in a laboratory environment by the Bornova Agricultural Struggle Research Institute Directorate, were released into nature.
Within the scope of the Sterile Insect Technique, the aim is to prevent the formation of new generations by enabling sterilized male flies to mate with females in the wild. This method seeks to suppress the pest population, which causes economic losses in fruit production, and reduce the use of chemical pesticides.
