Climate Crisis Hits French Agriculture
In statements made on public broadcaster Franceinfo, French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard reported that the drought, wildfires, and extreme heat experienced during the summer months have plunged the agricultural sector into a deep crisis. Emphasizing that the current weather conditions are causing significant difficulties for farmers, French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard summarized the sector's situation with the following words:
"We are having a terrible summer."
Noting that agricultural production in the country has been negatively affected, Genevard announced that there has not yet been a general and significant price increase due to fruits and vegetables remaining smaller than normal sizes.
Support for Farmers and Meteorological Situation
Stating that the exact figures for production loss have not yet been finalized, Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard announced that they will meet with prefects on August 27 to clarify the situation on the ground. It was stated that aid packages for the agricultural sector and affected regions will be detailed at the upcoming meeting. On the other hand, according to information shared by the French meteorological agency Meteo-France, the orange alert level, issued due to the extreme heatwave for the first time since July 29, has ended in all provinces.
