Denmark Bans Fast-Growing Chicken Breeds

Denmark is moving to ban fast-growing broiler breeds, known in the industry as 'turbo chickens,' both domestically and at the EU level.
Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Christian Rabjerg Madsen announced that they will take legal action to ban fast-growing broiler chicken breeds both in Denmark and across the European Union. Minister Madsen called on the public not to purchase these animals, commonly referred to as 'turbo chickens'.
The ministry's step comes after a television documentary filmed with a hidden camera at a chicken farm in the North Jutland region. The footage revealed that only half of the legally mandated dark period was applied daily to ensure the animals gained weight rapidly by consuming more feed, thus violating animal welfare legislation.
