Security and Diplomacy Move in the Black Sea
The de facto halt in grain shipments due to the targeting of commercial vessels in the Black Sea has brought global markets to the brink of a new food crisis. Attacks on the ports of Novorossiysk and Odessa have completely eliminated the safety of civilian navigation. As nearly 100 million tons of grain in Russia and Ukraine become unable to reach the market, Turkey has elevated its diplomatic initiatives. Ankara aims to prevent global food prices from surging by over 10% through a new security mechanism to be established with Moscow and Kyiv.
Record Grain Stock in Russian Silos
According to international agricultural organizations and global commodity analyses, the logistical bottleneck in the Black Sea has led to massive storage crises for two major producers. Russia, which accounts for approximately 20% of the world's wheat exports, has its ports locked down. Due to record harvests and export blockades, nearly 60 million tons of wheat and grain stocks are being held in storage in the country. If the shipping channels cannot be opened, the current stocks are expected to experience a significant loss in value with the new harvest season.
Shipment Crisis and Risks in Ukraine
A similar bottleneck is also affecting Ukraine, another crucial pillar of global agricultural supply. In Ukraine, which before the war supplied 46% of the world's sunflower oil, 12% of corn, and 9% of wheat, port shipments have completely stopped. Approximately 30 to 35 million tons of grain and oilseeds are awaiting shipment in silos and temporary storage facilities. The total volume of products that cannot be brought to market from the two countries increases the risk of spoilage in storage ahead of the approaching harvest.
