UK Wheat Records Highest Quality, But Farmer Incomes Suffer
· Tarım Pusulası

Despite achieving record quality in the 2026 UK wheat harvest, yield losses due to drought and falling premiums are pressuring producer incomes.
Record Wheat Quality Parameters
According to the results of the Grain Quality Survey published by the UK's Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), 79% of Group 1 feed wheat samples in the 2026 harvest met milling industry standards. This surpassed the historical record of 52% set in 2003. The average protein content increased from 13.4% to 13.8%, reaching its highest level since 1986. 83% of the samples examined met the minimum requirements, while the specific weight rose from 77.8 kg/hl to 81.4 kg/hl, and the Hagberg falling number recorded 360 seconds, setting a new record.

Yield Losses Due to Drought
Despite excellent quality parameters, the average yield of winter wheat across the UK remained at 6.9 tonnes per hectare. According to AHDB data, this harvest was approximately 11% below the five-year national average. Yields varied widely, ranging from 3.9 tonnes to 11.5 tonnes per hectare depending on the plot and farm. The hottest summer on record and the July drought directly impacted field yields, while intense sunshine increased grain protein concentration and dry harvest conditions preserved product quality.

Market Balance and Producer Income
The rapid increase in the supply of high-quality wheat in the market has significantly suppressed the quality premiums producers expected to receive for their grain. Influenced by a global wheat surplus, the UK's need for imported feed wheat is expected to decline in the 2026/27 marketing period. However, the 11% yield loss and rising production costs prevented the record quality from translating into profits for farmers. The AHDB assessment emphasizes that the rise in high-quality product supply alone is insufficient to increase agricultural profitability, and producer incomes are at risk.
