Financing Bottleneck Fuels Bankruptcies in Fertilizer Sector

Extended sales maturities exceeding 12 months and inadequate financing models in the fertilizer sector are triggering a wave of concordats and bankruptcies, directly driving up input costs.

Financing and Bankruptcy Risk in the Fertilizer Sector

The severe financial crises experienced by the sector were discussed at the 1st Fertilizer Consultation Meeting organized by the Association of Fertilizer Producers, Importers, and Exporters (GÜİD) in Antalya. According to GÜİD data, sales maturities in the sector exceeding 12 months and the lack of suitable financing models offered by banks pose significant risks to the market. Due to the inadequacy of financial payment models, concordat and bankruptcy proceedings are rapidly increasing among companies. The failure of payment systems to be secured by intermediary institutions directly reflects costs onto producers and leads to an increase in agricultural input prices.

Bureaucratic Processes and Labeling Obstacles

Another critical topic highlighted at the consultation meeting was the bureaucratic disruptions in registration, labeling, and TSE analysis processes. It was emphasized that companies face penalties due to visual differences between approved old labels and current labels. The rejection decisions regarding product names were stated to be challenging the entire sector, including international firms, and hindering the establishment of domestic brands. Participants demanded that the legislation be made more flexible and predictable to overcome these problems in market inspections.

Problems in Export and Analysis Processes

During the meeting, it was stated that export approval processes for fertilizers need to be accelerated and financial support models for exporters should be created. Pesticide analyses conducted on seaweed, which is critical for plant production, were also addressed. Specifically, the results of the joint information exchange between French state analysis laboratory GIRPA officials and TAGEM regarding the TERBUCARB active ingredient were shared. It was conveyed that the use of quality and correct fertilizers reduces climate-related environmental risks, and therefore, the protection of the supply chain is mandatory.

Joint Solution Plan with the Ministry

GÜİD announced that joint projects will be developed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to overcome the structural problems facing the sector. While the association's management is holding discussions with banks on alternative payment systems, it is preparing to submit a comprehensive problem file to the Ministry. The goal is to ensure that farmers can access fertilizers in a timely and economically favorable manner for the sustainability of agricultural production. Sector representatives emphasized that the steps to be taken will directly protect the production power of the agricultural economy.
