The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has updated the nation's harvest projection by correcting a technical processing error identified in its official agricultural data released in September. This calculation oversight, detected by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), stemmed from errors in the plant density and ear count calculations in Kansas and Nebraska. Following the correction, the September yield estimate per acre, previously at 1,120 kilograms, was adjusted to approximately 1,121 kilograms. As a result of this technical correction, the nation's total corn production estimate saw an increase of 711,000 tons. Consequently, the production forecast, previously announced as 401.32 million tons, was revised to 402.03 million tons.

Market Reaction and October Expectations

The ministry's retrospective correction step has resonated widely in global commodity markets and grain trading. According to information reported by Reuters, the institution, which has recently faced criticism from grain trading companies and agricultural economists regarding the reliability of its forecasts, did not make any changes to its controversial October estimates. The previously announced higher-than-expected harvest forecasts had led to sharp declines in U.S. corn futures prices. Ministry officials stated that this technical update to the September data absolutely does not affect the current October harvest estimates, and the existing projections remain unchanged.
