Hazelnut harvest has commenced in Giresun's coastal regions up to 250 meters in altitude, with producers and agricultural workers engaged in intensive labor amidst challenging terrain.
Hazelnut Harvest Begins in Coastal Areas
The 2026 harvest season for hazelnuts, one of Turkey's strategic agricultural products, has officially begun in Giresun. Producers, entering orchards in areas up to 250 meters in altitude along the coast, started picking the ripe crops early in the morning. Muzaffer Türkmen, a producer in Boztekke village near the city center, stated that they harvested approximately 1 ton of hazelnuts from his garden with a team of 20 workers in a single day. Producers are bagging the harvested hazelnuts and transporting them to threshing grounds, accelerating preparations for subsequent processing steps such as drying and threshing.
Challenging Harvesting and Transportation Efforts in the Fields
Workers in the hazelnut orchards continue their labor despite difficult geographical and climatic conditions. Yıldız Aydın, who has been involved in hazelnut harvesting for about 40 years, noted that high temperatures are making their work more difficult, while Sefine Henden, a harvest worker for the past 3 years, evaluated the process as follows:
"Thank God, it's going well now. We are in harmony with the other friends working in the harvest. We are fine as long as there is no rain and mud."
Mustafa Demir, who transports the harvested products to the threshing area, also pointed out that transporting sacks weighing between 30 and 50 kilograms on the sloping terrain requires significant effort.
