Siirt Pistachios: Increased Yield Expectations with Spring Rains

Despite experiencing a 'down year' due to periodicity, Siirt is anticipating high yields and increased productivity in its pistachio orchards, thanks to the impact of winter and spring rainfall.
Harvest Excitement Begins for Siirt Pistachios
Producers have started harvest preparations with high yield expectations for Siirt pistachios, the province's most important agricultural product with geographical indication registration. Last year, approximately 30,000 tons of pistachios were harvested from over 12 million trees spread across 415,000 decares in the province. Although this year is a 'down year' due to periodicity, favorable seasonal conditions have increased producer expectations. Mustafa Şanverdi, the Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, along with agricultural engineers, inspected the development and nut filling of trees in pistachio orchards in the central district and its towns.
Spring Rains Provided Vital Moisture to Orchards
Continuous rainfall in the region during the winter and spring months helped pistachio trees recover from drought stress and strengthen their shoots. Highlighting the value of Siirt pistachios to the provincial economy, Siirt Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mustafa Şanverdi made the following assessment:
"Siirt pistachios are a very important agricultural product for our province's economy. We have over 12 million pistachio trees on approximately 415,000 decares in our province. Siirt pistachios have become a significant source of income for producers."
Şanverdi stated that the harvest will begin about two weeks later due to the rainfall and warned producers to wait for the nuts to reach full maturity.
Sapling and Grafting Scion Support Continues
Provincial directorate teams are continuously carrying out farmer training and technical extension activities in the field. Touching upon the support provided to increase production capacity, Siirt Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mustafa Şanverdi said:
"While we are working to solve our farmers' problems related to fertilization, cultivation, and pollination, we are also continuing to monitor our orchards. We are distributing pistachio saplings to producers to increase production areas. This year, we will distribute around 40,000 pistachio saplings. To solve the pollination problem in pistachios, male grafting scions have also been distributed, as every year. We distributed 400 male grafting scions this year."
A Grand Target of 100,000 Tons in Production
Stating that Siirt pistachio production has grown exponentially over the years, Siirt Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mustafa Şanverdi announced their targets as follows:
"Last year, due to extreme heat, our shoots did not grow very long. Therefore, we can consider this year as a 'down year'. However, with the rainfall, we expect better yields. Our shoots are good this year. Our pistachio yield, which was 2,000 tons in the 2000s in our province, has now exceeded 30,000 tons. With the efforts and hard work of our producers, we are continuing our work towards our goal of initially 50,000 tons, and then 100,000 tons."
Natural Disaster Damages Covered by TARSİM
Siirt Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mustafa Şanverdi noted the value of pistachio production for the welfare of the provincial population:
"Pistachios mean hope, excitement. Our producers await the days when they will receive the rewards for their year-long labor. Our weddings, gatherings, and hopes are all tied to our pistachio harvest. Our province continues to increase production in an atmosphere of security and peace. We share the excitement and happiness of our producers and continue to stand by them to produce more and earn more."
TARSİM support was provided to farmers for local frost and hail damage.
Producers Counting Down to Harvest
Emphasizing that they have not neglected their year-round maintenance work in the pistachio orchards, pistachio producer Osman Oysal shared his feelings with the following words:
"Despite this, we still expect a good yield this year. We will receive the reward for our labor with the harvest that begins in September. Our damage in the hail-affected area has been covered by TARSİM. Our Provincial Director and branch managers visit our orchards, inspect the pistachios, and help us with diseases and pests. We thank our state."
Ahmet Demir, one of the producers, pointed to the contribution of rainfall to nut filling and concluded his remarks as follows:
"We completed our preparations throughout the year and are waiting for the harvest. The clusters are full, and we expect a high yield."
